Still Life
These photographs were made at the Whitchurch Canonicorum & Morecombelake Annual Flower Show in the Marshwood Vale, West Dorset. Exploring the genre of the still life, they depict the prize-winning produce with an extraordinary degree of realism by virtue of their photographically intense depth of field. This heightened visual acuity exposes the perfectly imperfect characteristics of the produce and its presentation in a scrupulously equitable style.
Proceeding along the path of realism embodied by Zeuxis’ grapes, these marrows, eggs and runner beans are photographed with such a forensic scrutiny and sculptural depth, their appearance challenges the confines of the two-dimensional, inviting a synesthesiastic reception. Simultaneously, the quotidian aesthetic obliquely lays bare an aspect of contemporary rural England.
